A woman begins a life-altering journey when her pregnancy test comes back positive. Pregnancy brings an element of uncertainty as well as excitement to a woman’s life. Suddenly there is a list of dos and don’ts.  With advice pouring in from everyone including family and friends, it is tough to know who to listen to. The sanest advice would be to listen to your healthcare professionals and listen very closely to what your body is telling you. Here are some simple tips to ensure that your pregnancy goes smoothly.

Listen to your body

Your body is changing each minute and it will warn you when there is something different. Listen carefully. Be mindful of yourself. Take extra care of your general health, including emotional wellbeing during pregnancy.

Prenatal tests

As soon as you find out you are pregnant, consult a healthcare professional. Do the prenatal checkups at regular intervals as stipulated by your doctor. These tests help your healthcare professional keep tabs on both you and your baby’s wellbeing. Most doctors prescribe prenatal vitamins rich in folic acid and iron for your child’s development. Do take them at the regular times.

Eat healthy foods

If you are pregnant, you are bound to hear some wellwisher or other tell you “Remember you are eating for two people.” You are indeed eating for two people. However, it is important to be mindful of your eating habits. Make a healthier switch if you have been procrastinating about it.   The food you eat should be rich in proteins and nutrients essential for the baby’s growth. Add whole grains, calcium-rich foods, fruits and vegetables to your diet. Drink lots of water. Limit your distractions during mealtimes. Take time to relish your meal.

Stay active

Unless otherwise mentioned, stay active. Follow a strict but not strenuous workout schedule. Consult with your doctor to figure out how much physical activity is right for you. Track your weight gain. You are bound to put on some weight during pregnancy, however, ensure that you do not cross the stipulated numbers. Stick to the BMI advised by the doctors.

Indulge yourself

Did you know that one in 10 women suffer from depression during pregnancy? Don’t be a statistic. Try to be honest about your feelings. If something is bothering you, confide in your partner, friend, family member, health care provider or anyone you trust. Surround yourself with happiness and a stress-free environment. Treat yourself to simple pleasures like a spa treatment or a shopping trip. The idea is to release as much stress as possible so that you and your baby stays happy and healthy.

Know when to call the doctor

Despite all the preparations, pregnancy can be confusing, especially if it is your first. Contact your doctor if you have pains of any kind, strong cramps, contractions, vaginal bleeding, shortness of breath, constant nausea and vomiting. Any change in the baby’s movements should also be noted and reported to the doctor.

The key takeaway is listen to your body and trust your doctor – and smile through this phase of life
